Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale Central, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, has countered claims by Efutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin that the Supreme Court’s recent ruling mandates compliance with the majority seat arrangement in Parliament.
According to Murtala Mohammed, the Court’s decision did not determine where the majority or minority should sit, as no constitutional provision dictates seating arrangements.
His comments came after Afenyo-Markin’s statement on November 12, following the Supreme Court ruling against Speaker Alban Bagbin’s declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant. Afenyo-Markin asserted that the ruling reaffirmed the Constitution and expected Parliament to comply.
However, speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, the Tamale Central MP stated, “The Supreme Court didn’t rule on seating positions, and there is no provision in the 1992 Constitution for this—it’s purely a convention.”
Murtala Mohammed also accused Afenyo-Markin of inconsistency, recalling how Afenyo-Markin had “used vulgar words against the Speaker” while now calling for “respect” for Bagbin.
He emphasized that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has consistently upheld constitutional principles, unlike the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“We have demonstrated respect for the Constitution,” he affirmed.
