The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has praised the Majority Caucus of Parliament for standing firm in defence of the rule of law during a heated parliamentary session on October 22, 2024.
Led by Majority leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the MPs on the NPP ticket resisted what the party described as an”unconstitutional attempt” by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to alter the composition of Parliament in favour of the opposition NDC.
In a statement signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua, the NPP applauded its MPs for their maturity in the face of provocation from the NDC Minority and for using lawful means to challenge the Speaker’s actions.
The party noted that the Supreme Court had sided with the Majority Caucus, ordering the Speaker to reverse his decision.
The NPP further urged Speaker Bagbin to uphold his constitutional duty as a neutral arbiter, warning against partisan actions that could threaten Ghana’s democracy.
The party reminded the opposition that it is the electorate, not Parliament, who determine the majority and minority in the legislature.
The NPP reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s peace and stability, accusing the NDC of attempting to destabilize the country for political gain.
“It is evident that the Opposition NDC and its apparatchiks, led by the Speaker of Parliament and the NDC Minority Caucus, want to undermine the democracy Ghanaians have fought so hard to build. We are currently enjoying peace, stability, economic growth but, in their quest for political power, the NDC want to destabilise the entire country and risk the lives of every Ghanaian. Their behaviour is irresponsible, undemocratic and unpatriotic. Are these the people the Ghanaian voter wishes to hand over governance of the country to on December 7th. A Bawumia-led government and NPP Majority Caucus will uphold the rule of law, strengthen Ghana’s democracy and continue to keep this country on the path of peace and prosperity,” a part of the statement read.
