A painter accused of stealing electrical cables at the Bank of Ghana building in Ridge has been granted bail by an Accra Circuit Court.

Ahmed Mohammed Lawal was admitted to bail in the sum of GH₵1 million with two sureties. The presiding judge, Mr. Isaac Addo, also ordered the Prosecution to comply with the rules of disclosure. The case has been adjourned to May 7, 2025.

Lawal faces charges of unlawful entry and stealing electrical cables worth GH₵1,035,500, a charge he denies.

Earlier, the Prosecution, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Agustin Kingsley Oppong, informed the Court that the complainants—Samuel Nii Tettey, a safety officer, and Davidson Mensah Otinkorang, an electrical engineer—were employees at the Bank of Ghana’s new building, which was under construction.

According to the Prosecution, on February 16, 2025, the complainants discovered that someone had broken into the Energy Farm at the construction site and stolen a quantity of copper cables, specifically 1c x240 and 1c x300 square cables, valued at GH₵1,035,500.

The Prosecution explained that the discovery led to a review of the site’s Close-Circuit Television (CCTV) footage, which showed Lawal and two others stealing the cables. The bundles of electrical cables were stored at the site.

The complainants apprehended Lawal and handed him over to the police. Investigations revealed that the accused and two accomplices, who remain at large, accessed the Energy Farm via a scaffold. They used a sharp object to cut the cables and remove them.

Further investigations showed that Lawal sold the stolen cables to a buyer at Kwame Nkrumah Circle and received GH₵2,000 for his share.

Despite being unable to lead the police to arrest his accomplices or the alleged “dishonest receiver,” Lawal is facing serious charges in connection with the theft.
