Otumfuo, Akufo-Addo, thousands mourn Akyempimhene

The final rites of Akyempimhene Oheneba Adusei Poku reached a solemn climax as the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, President Nana Akufo-Addo, and other dignitaries joined thousands of mourners to pay their last respects in Kumasi.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia led a delegation of New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwarts, including his running mate Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, to the ceremony.

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor was also present, alongside Nana Kwame Bediako  to commiserate with the family and subjects of The Akyempemhene as he makes his final journey to the ancestors.

The three-day burial ceremony, known as dote yie, saw widespread tributes to the late royal, who served as Akyempimhene of Manhyia for 42 years.

In a mark of reverence, shops in the bustling central business district of Adum were closed to honor his memory.

Oheneba Adusei Poku’s interment is scheduled to take place tonight, concluding the elaborate rites that have highlighted the cultural and historical significance of his leadership within Asanteman.

Cultural historian Teacher Sarfo Kantanka, speaking with Amansankyeame Kwadwo Obeng Mireku, shed light on the traditional importance of the ceremonies, emphasizing their role in preserving the dignity and legacy of the Asante royal lineage.

The late Akyempimhene’s enduring impact on his community remains a testament to his decades of dedicated service. May his soul rest in peace.
