Otto Addo is a top coach – Nana Oduro Sarfo backs under-pressure Black Stars coach

Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Nana Sarfo Oduro has backed Black Stars coach Otto Addo, describing him as a top-tier coach despite recent criticism.

The 47-year-old Addo, who was reappointed in March 2024, is under intense scrutiny after Ghana’s senior national team failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Black Stars finished last in Group F with just three points, sparking widespread calls for his dismissal.

However, in an interview on Asempa FM’s Sports Nite Show, Oduro Sarfo defended Addo’s abilities and emphasized the team’s potential to qualify for the 2026 World Cup under his leadership.

“Otto Addo is doing two things. He is at the point of qualifying for the World Cup, though he could not qualify for the AFCON. So what shows he has not performed well?” Oduro argued.

He further praised Addo’s tactical expertise, resilience, and contributions to Ghanaian football, drawing a comparison to world-renowned managers.

“He [Otto Addo] is a top coach. He qualified us for the World Cup. Another ‘Mourinho’ could have lost,” he added.

The GFA has yet to announce a decision on Otto Addo’s future following the team’s AFCON disappointment.

In the meantime, the Black Stars aim to redeem themselves as they prepare for Matchday 5 and 6 of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, facing Chad and Madagascar in March.
