Otto Addo dismisses concerns over Black Stars captaincy in Chad win

-

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has downplayed concerns regarding the captain’s armband during Ghana’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Chad in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The issue arose in the 80th minute when Jordan Ayew, after being substituted, handed the armband to Alexander Djiku.

However, Djiku passed it on to Thomas Partey, who appeared to consult the technical bench before eventually wearing it.

Partey’s time as captain was brief, as he was substituted just three minutes later for Lawrence Agyekum. On his way off, he attempted to give the armband back to Djiku, who once again declined and instead passed it to Mohammed Kudus, who wore it for the remainder of the match.

Addressing questions about the incident, Addo dismissed any controversy, stating, “I didn’t see the armband lying on the grass. After Jordan left, somebody took it. When Partey left, somebody took it. So everything is clear.”

Ghana’s dominant win over Chad has propelled them to the top of Group I with 12 points.

A victory against Madagascar on Monday would solidify their lead and bring them closer to securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
