Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has admitted that his job would have been in jeopardy had Ghana lost to Chad in their recent 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
Despite a six-game winless streak in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) reinforced the technical team with experienced personnel.
Former Cameroon and Jamaica coach Winfried Anton Schafer was appointed as a Technical Advisor, while Kris Perquy joined as a psychologist. Additionally, Black Satellites coach Desmond Ofei was brought in as an assistant coach to support Addo.
The changes appeared to pay off as the Black Stars secured a resounding 5-0 victory over Chad on Friday night at the Accra Sports Stadium in their Matchday five fixture.
Speaking on the influence of the new technical staff, Otto Addo acknowledged the complexity of football and the collective effort required for success.
“Football is way too complex to blame it on this or that person. [If] we had lost, the blame would have been placed on me. [Winning] it is because of somebody else,” he said.
“The truth is, it is the players, the spectators, the media, me. I want to also say big congratulations to the green keepers for the grass. It was wet, so it is much better to play. So it is a lot of things, not only the technical team, but also surely, the new members of the technical team have their part, for sure.”
Ghana currently leads Group I with 12 points, and a victory against Madagascar on Monday would strengthen their grip at the top while edging them closer to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Black Stars will face Madagascar in their Matchday six encounter on Monday in Morocco.
