The Oti Regional Minister, John Kwadjo Gyapong, has urged the youth in the Biakoye district and Krachi East Municipality to fully embrace the government’s irrigation for wealth creation initiative.
Oti’s agricultural landscape, rich in potential, has been selected as a key area for phase 1 of the irrigation projects. The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) launched this initiative to boost agricultural production and enhance food security across the country.
In a meeting with chiefs at Nkonya Wurupong, Bumbula, and Bowiri Kwamekroom in the Biakoye district, the minister emphasized the transformative impact irrigation could have on agricultural productivity and regional economic growth.
This discussion came after a team from the Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (GIDA) inspected more than 3,000 acres of land designated for the project.
Gyapong stressed that the initiative would provide farmers with resources for year-round crop cultivation, minimizing dependency on seasonal rainfall and bolstering food security.
The government, he added, is committed to enhancing agricultural productivity through modernized irrigation systems, aiming to increase crop yields and foster sustainable livelihoods for the region’s youth.
Recognizing the critical role the youth play in shaping the future of agriculture, the minister encouraged them to explore various agricultural ventures, particularly vegetable farming, which thrives with irrigation support.
In response, the chiefs expressed gratitude for the government’s efforts in improving irrigation infrastructure.
They pledged to rally the youth to seize the opportunities the project offers and urged the minister and government to address the challenge posed by Fulani herdsmen activities in the area to ensure the project’s sustainability.
