The family of the late Edward Borketey Sackey, a final-year student at O’Reilly Senior High School who was fatally stabbed by a colleague on September 2, 2024, has accused the school’s teachers of being complicit in his death.
The family alleged that, the teachers did nothing to intervene during the stabbing, as evidenced by footage showing them passively observing the violent incident.
Nii Afotey Chiribour IV, the family head, expressed his frustration during an interview on GhanaWeb claiming that the teachers’ inaction makes them accountable for Sackey’s death.
“There were over 15 teachers’ vehicles parked at the school while the incident occurred,” Nii Chiribour IV stated. “The boy was attacked right in front of them, and they did nothing. He lay there bleeding, and by the time he was taken to the hospital, it was too late; he was pronounced dead upon arrival.”
He said had the teachers acted promptly and taken Sackey to the hospital sooner, his life might have been saved.
According to Nii Chiribour IV, Sackey had sought help from the teachers while being attacked but received no assistance.
Following the incident, Nii Chiribour IV mentioned that his children were on the verge of assaulting the teachers in retaliation.
However, he intervened, urging them to refrain from violence and allow the police to handle the situation.
“I had to calm them down and prevent them from breaking the law. I explained that the police were already involved, and it took me two hours to persuade them to leave the school,” he added.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that it will investigate the incident to address the concerns raised by the family.
