Ordering military to kill illegal miners can’t fight galamsey – Small Scale miner

-

The Director of Finance of the Small Scale Miners Association, Francis Opoku has expressed his doubt about deploying military men to shoot and kill illegal miners as a way of fighting ‘galamsey’.

He stated that, ordering the military to kill illegal miners, popularly known as galamseyers, would not effectively combat the menace.

This is because, he believes that most military officers would be more inclined to take bribes from the miners rather than carry out their orders to kill them.

According to Mr. Opoku, many people are entering the mining industry because it has become the easiest way to make money.

He believes it is the government’s responsibility to implement policies to minimize this trend.

“To me the idea of ordering the military officers to kill any galamseyers they meet of site is not the right approach. It cannot solve the issue because some of the military officers would rather take bribes from galamseyers and throw away their bullets.

“Everyone is running into mining because that is the quickest way to make money so what I am saying is that the government should put in place measure.”

Regarding Frank Anno Dompreh’s accusation that the National Democratic congress (NDC) had polluted water bodies than the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, Francis Opoku described it as disgraceful.

“As for the honorable who made the comment that NDC has polluted water bodies more than the NPP, I mean which comment is very disgraceful” he said.
