One hospitalised after fire destroys textile shop at Lapaz Market

One person has been hospitalised after a fire ravaged a textile shop at Lapaz Market in the Greater Accra Region.

The unfortunate incident occurred on Sunday afternoon at a shop on top of a single-storey structure opposite the Lapaz Ecobank Branch.

A young woman, believed to be the shop owner, collapsed upon sighting her shop in flames and was rushed to the Lapaz Community Hospital.

In a statement, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said they received a distress call at 14:25 hours, and the first response team from the Abelemkpe Fire Station, led by ADO I Samuel Edziah, arrived at the scene at 14:35 hours.

The fire destroyed items such as towels, curtains, curtain rods, and bedsheets within the shop.

The fire was brought under control at 15:03 hours and was finally extinguished at 16:35 hours by the combined efforts of firefighters from Abelemkpe and Headquarters.

Firefighters successfully salvaged 13 adjoining shops from the blaze, preventing further damage.

Two pumps from Abelemkpe and Headquarters were dispatched to the scene to douse the fire.

Meanwhile, no other injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
