One dead, Police Commander’s house burnt in Bawku

-

One person has been killed and at least two others critically injured during renewed clashes in Bawku, Upper East Region, on Wednesday afternoon.

The violence also saw the private residence of the Bawku Divisional Police Commander, ACP Adamu Seidu, set on fire.

The incident reportedly began when one faction of the ongoing chieftaincy dispute demanded that women from the opposing faction, who were trading at the market, leave. A scuffle ensued, prompting police intervention.

However, gunfire erupted when some young people allegedly opened fire on the police, leading to an exchange of shots.

The shooting resulted in the death of one civilian and the injury of two others, further escalating tensions.

In retaliation, radical youth reportedly attacked the police commander’s residence, setting it on fire. It remains unclear if anyone was inside the house at the time.

Joy News sources also indicate that a police barracks was targeted, and a police vehicle was set on fire. As a result, security forces evacuated personnel from the barracks.

Tensions are high, and security agencies are working to restore order in the area.
