Residents of the Old Buipe electoral area in the Savannah Region are threatening to boycott the December polls and stage protests due to a lack of development in their communities.
According to them, they have been neglected by the government, citing issues like inadequate healthcare, poor road conditions, unreliable network connectivity, and other challenges that have made their lives difficult.
The area, which includes Old Buipe, Lito, Gbongbonto, Winamda, Boachipe, and Braimape, is suffering from a deteriorating road network, worsened by recent rains.
The main road is riddled with potholes and becomes muddy when it rains, making commuting hazardous.
In an interview with Channel One News, residents expressed their frustrations.
The Old Buipe D/A Primary School, the only school in the area, often has pupils playing instead of attending classes due to lack teachers, who are reluctant to work there because of the poor infrastructure.
Malia Zakaria, a local trader, spoke about the difficulties in reaching the Buipe market to sell goods, often having to endure hazardous journeys on tricycles due to the poor road conditions.
She also highlighted the problem of accessing healthcare, as the nearest facility is miles away.
Yahaya Muntaka, another resident, pointed out the severe network issues in the area, which prevent residents from calling for help, especially in emergencies like childbirth.
He stressed the urgency of their situation and warned that if their demands are not met, they will abstain from voting on December 7.
In a press statement read by Mahama Tanko, the community gave the government a two-week deadline to address their concerns or face mass protests, including boycotting the elections.
In response, the area’s MP, John Abdulai Jinapor, assured that contractors would soon begin work on the roads.
