Oforikrom MP criticizes NPP leadership over electoral defeat

-

The Member of Parliament for Oforikrom Constituency, Emmanuel Marfo, has stated that the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) failed to control the direction of the government.

His comment comes in the wake of the party’s defeat in the recent general elections, where the National Democratic Congress (NDC) won with 56% of the vote, while the NPP garnered 41%.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Burning Issues, the MP attributed the loss to the inability of the party leadership to exert control over the government.

He explained that, when the majority of the party’s Members of Parliament raised concerns about the poor state of the country’s economy and signed a petition for the removal of then-Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, the party leadership failed to support the MPs in addressing the issue and correcting the government’s course.

Instead, the party leadership remained silent, which Dr. Marfo described as a significant weakness.

“Every political party is superior to its government and must guide it in the right direction. If the party fails to do so, it leads itself into a ditch. From my experience, I believe this is what has happened to the NPP – the party leaders were unable to control the government,” he said.

He added, “About 90 NPP MPs stood up and warned about the poor performance of Ken Ofori-Atta, yet the party leadership did not back the MPs.”

Dr. Emmanuel Marfo also noted that the party’s defeat was self-inflicted, citing contradictions between the policies of President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as a key factor.

“For example, while the President implemented the e-levy, his Vice President was promising to abolish it. Such contradictions erode the trust and faith of citizens in the party,” he concluded.
