Official: New way to check validity of your vehicle insurance

-

The National Insurance Commission (NIC) has rolled out a new Motor Insurance Database (MID) that makes it possible for people to check the validity of vehicle insurances anywhere and offline.

The system comes to replace an manual system that existed prior to the MID.

Deputy Commissioner of NIC, Michael Kofi Andoh, said the new policy, which took effect from January 1, 2020, comes with a comprehensive electronic database.

With the new system, motorists can easily use their mobile phones to check whether the commercial vehicles they are about to board are properly insured, he said.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem Thursday, Mr Andoh said the MID will also help in tracking hit-and-run drivers when accidents do occur.

“All you have to do is to enter the short code *920*57#, enter the car number and follow the instructions even if it is a ‘yam’ phone.

On doing so, all the details about the vehicle and insurance will pop up, he added.

Mr Andoh said the introduction of the MID was to curb the menace of vehicles with fake motor insurance stickers that ply the country’s roads to endanger lives and property.

“Fake vehicle insurance stickers was one of the major challenges [that faced the industry] because they were being sold for as low as GHc50, making vehicle owners rush for them. As a result, drivers could not claim their insurance when accidents occur,” he lamented.
