The Obuasi Small-Scale Miners Association has called for justice and compensation for victims of a clash between its members and the military security of AngloGold Ashanti (AGA).
The group issued a one-week ultimatum to AGA and the government to address their concerns or face unspecified actions.
Speaking at a press conference in Obuasi, the association’s chairman, Kofi Adams, urged the government and AGA to convene a roundtable discussion within a week to resolve the matter.
He warned that failure to do so would compel the miners to seek alternative measures.
Kofi Adams also called for proof regarding the alleged shooting of a military officer, as claimed by AGA, and expressed frustration over the lack of progress on compensation for the victims, which the government reportedly directed AGA to provide.
He disclosed that seven of the nine deceased miners have been buried, with two miners still yet to be laid to rest.
Some injured victims have been discharged from the hospital but continue to require medical reviews, with all expenses covered by the leadership of the small-scale miners.
Additionally, the chairman appealed to AngloGold Ashanti to release areas known as Cut 3, Arm 4, and Kaaso to the miners.
He argued that such a move would resolve the long-standing conflicts between AGA and the small-scale miners.
“We are pleading with AngloGold to relinquish these areas to us. If that happens, the conflict between AGA and small-scale miners will become a thing of the past,” Kofi Adams added.
