The family of Lawrencia Naa Borley Nelson (Naa Gamu), who died during a chieftaincy installation at Nungua, has spoken out about the incident.
In an interview with Accra-based TV3, her brother, Raphael Nii Bortey Agbli, claimed she could have survived if not for medical delays.
“We went to the first place, but they didn’t even offer first aid and turned us away to go to LEKMA. When we got to LEKMA emergency, they also said we should take her to Ridge Hospital.
“Imagine the distance, nobody helped us. Not even an ambulance. They said there was none. We got to Ridge; they removed the bullet and dressed her leg only for them to tell us she is dead,” he sadly recounted.
Naa Borley was fatally shot in the thigh when a musket was fired during the ceremony.
Despite earlier reports denying her status as a queenmother, the family clarified that she had been enstooled as the queen and her husband as chief of the Ga-Adangme Moslem Union (GAMU), Nungua West branch.
Raphael expressed difficulty coping with his sister’s sudden death.
“I keep having flashes of her. I haven’t slept since the incident. All the hospitals failed us, and I wish their licenses would be revoked or the hospitals shut down. What’s their use?” he lamented.
Her uncle, Martison Quaye, suspects foul play in the incident.
“This is very painful. We heard the suspect has been arrested, but as a family, we haven’t seen him. We need to see him and ask him why he did that.
“Firstly, in such ceremonies, isn’t it gunpowder that is used? And secondly, isn’t he supposed to fire into the sky? Why shoot behind her thigh?” he questioned.
Meanwhile, the Nungua District Court on Wednesday remanded Samuel Adjei into police custody for two weeks over the incident.
Preliminary police investigations indicate that the suspect allegedly discharged live ammunition from a single-barrel gun during the ceremony.
Samuel is expected to reappear before the court on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.
