The Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has criticized the Ashanti Regional Minister for demanding the dismissal of Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) officers, arguing that they deserve support rather than victimization.
Describing the Minister’s actions as unfair and demoralizing, Ntim Fordjour emphasized that firefighters risk their lives daily to protect lives and property.
In a post on X on Wednesday, March 26, he urged politicians to serve with humility and not let personal interests undermine the morale of public servants.
“Egoistic whims and caprices of a populist Regional Minister cannot be allowed to demoralize and victimize our gallant Fire Officers who professionally and most patriotically risk their lives daily to extinguish fires in our country,” he stated.
He insisted that the matter should be put to rest, warning against any disciplinary actions against the affected officers.
“Whatever happened, let’s move on! This letter should settle it all. No further disciplinary action will be countenanced. No Fire Officer will be allowed to suffer any unfair termination, transfer, nor demotion as a result of the ego of a politician who should rather be supporting and resourcing our Fire Officers to discharge their duties,” he declared.
Rev. Ntim Fordjour also highlighted the chronic underfunding of the GNFS, stressing that instead of demanding dismissals, authorities should focus on equipping firefighters with the necessary resources.
“Ghana National Fire Service is woefully underfunded and misunderstood,” he noted, calling for increased support to enhance the service’s effectiveness.
