NPP’s Opoku Agyemang endorses Bawumia’s plan for 50 ministers [Listen]

-

Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Legal and Governance Committee, Lawyer Maxwell Opoku Agyemang, has supported a lean government structure as proposed by the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

He made this known in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday, following Dr. Bawumia’s pledge to limit ministerial appointments to 50 if elected as Ghana’s next president.

Dr. Bawumia had said at the NPP manifesto launch in Takoradi on August 18, 2024, that efficient governance does not require a large number of ministers.

“I will have no more than 50 ministers in my government” he stressed.

But Mr. Agyemang endorsing this approach said credibility in politics is very critical and therefore expressed his confidence in Bawumia’s integrity and willingness to follow through on his promises.

“If Ghana can be developed with 50 ministers, then so be it. There are ministries that one person cannot handle alone and might need a deputy.”

He therefore praised Dr. Bawumia’s commitment to a streamlined government.

He stressed, “Offering service has many ways, and not everyone will get a ministerial position. We must support the flagbearer’s vision and not be selfish. The position of ministers of state and ministers will add up to 50, but this is the first promise we have made, and we believe we can achieve it.”

Mr. Agyemang also addressed the proposed review of asset declarations every two years and the need for consolidation within ministries.

He stressed the importance of dedication to serving Ghana.

“There are many ways to serve and be recognized. We are not entering this for ‘do or die’ but to work for Ghana.”
