The New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus in Parliament is actively working to reconcile with Cynthia Mamle Morrison, MP for Agona West, and Kwadjo Asante, MP for Suhum, who are dissatisfied over issues related to the party’s parliamentary primaries in their constituencies.
Both MPs were unsuccessful in securing the NPP’s nomination to run for re-election in 2024 on the party’s ticket.
As a result, they have decided to contest the 2024 parliamentary elections in their respective constituencies as independent candidates.
Their decision to run as independents has created tension in Parliament, particularly after the Speaker recently declared their seats, along with two others, vacant under Article 97 of the Constitution, citing cross-carpeting.
The other two seats affected are those of Andrew Asiamah Amoako, MP for Fomena and Deputy Speaker of Parliament, and Anthony Ackah, MP for Amenfi Central from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In an interview on Tuesday, October 21, 2024, Majority leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin acknowledged that while the party is in a difficult situation, efforts are being made to resolve internal conflicts.
However, he noted that the process to bring back those who have parted ways with the party is still ongoing and has not yet been finalized.
