NPP calls for legal education reform and constitutional review [Listen]

-

Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Legal and Governance Committee, Lawyer Maxwell Opoku Agyemang, has proposed significant reforms for Ghana’s legal education and constitutional framework.

Lawyer Agyemang suggested that the Ghana School of Law should be restructured to become the central body responsible for training lawyers, rather than being regulated by the General Legal Council (GLC).

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday, he stressed the need for a comprehensive review of Ghana’s constitution.

“Our constitution has governance defects, so we believe a review will be best. We are not seeking to rewrite it but to conduct a thorough review” he said.

He noted that, preparatory work for this review is already complete, and the next step is to secure the necessary will to proceed.

Lawyer Agyemang said the GLC should focus solely on the regulation of lawyers, while ensuring the highest standards of quality at the Ghana School of Law.

Meanwhile, the NPP presented its manifesto for the upcoming December 2024 general elections on Sunday, August 18, 2024.

Titled “Selfless Leadership, Bold Solutions for Jobs and Business,” the manifesto was unveiled by the party’s flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The document outlines policies aimed at fostering collaboration between the government and the private sector to address the critical issue of job creation.

As Dr. Bawumia stated, “The manifesto focuses on policies and programs that we believe will help transform Ghana and create jobs, which is a major priority for us.”
