The Achimota Circuit Court has granted bail to New Patriotic Party (NPP) activist, Mohammed Zakou, who was arrested for allegedly spreading false information about Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
Zakou was arrested after making a Facebook post on April 12, which read, “Rest well, Her Excellency,” despite earlier clarification from the government that the Vice President was only unwell.
Following his arrest, Zakou was charged with the offence of communicating false news.
A prosecutor from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) told the court that the accused had admitted to making the post but explained it was intended as a goodwill gesture toward the Vice President.
During proceedings on Monday, Zakou’s legal counsel, Gary Nimako Marfo, applied for bail on behalf of his client.
The court granted bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 with two sureties. Zakou is also required to report to the investigator once a week.
The case has been adjourned to May 12, 2025, for a case management conference.
