Nothing has changed at Black Stars – Nii Lante Vanderpuye despite wins

Former Youth and Sports Minister, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has raised concerns over the Black Stars’ performance, despite their dominant back-to-back victories in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in March.

In their Matchday 5 and 6 fixtures, Ghana secured a commanding 5-0 win over Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium, followed by a 3-0 triumph against Madagascar in Morocco. These victories ended a six-match winless streak and propelled the Black Stars to the top of Group I with 15 points, with four matches remaining in the qualifiers.

However, Vanderpuye expressed doubts about the overall quality of the national team during an interview, suggesting that the current squad does not meet the required standards.

“So, sometimes you must appreciate the quality of the game that was played. You must look at whether the team has moved from level A to level B, from class one to class two, and not just focus on the result,” he told Channel TV.

He further emphasized that, despite the wide scorelines, the two victories did not provide clear evidence of improvement in the team’s overall performance.

“And I think the two matches we have played so far don’t give me any indication that there has been an improvement in the team, even though we’ve won those matches by wide scorelines,” he added.

Ghana will face Chad and Mali in the Matchday 7 and 8 encounters in September later this year.
