President-elect John Dramani Mahama has directed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary leadership to nominate Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as the Speaker of the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.
The decision, taken in consultation with the party’s National Executive and Parliamentary Leadership, is aimed at leveraging Bagbin’s extensive parliamentary experience to strengthen the legislative arm of government.
Rt. Hon. Bagbin has served Parliament in various capacities, including as Minority Leader, Majority Leader, and most recently, Speaker of the 8th Parliament. His tenure has been marked by notable contributions to legislative development and parliamentary governance.
President-elect Mahama expressed confidence that Bagbin’s leadership will enhance Parliament’s capacity to fulfill its oversight duties effectively during this pivotal phase of Ghana’s democratic journey.
If voted, he becomes the first speaker to be retained since 2020 and the second speaker to be retained in the 4th republic.
