No to betting companies – Kurt Okraku on GPL matches on bookmakers

Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has vowed to take decisive action against betting companies that have been featuring Ghana Premier League matches without authorization.

He emphasized that no bookmaker has been licensed to offer odds on these games.

Speaking at the GFA’s 30th Ordinary Congress, Okraku outlined his commitment to stop this unauthorized activity, stating that the Association’s legal team will soon engage with these betting companies to address the issue.

“We have not licensed any betting company to take odds on our games. We are going to empower our legal department to confront this issue head-on. It is not okay for betting companies to feed on our football,” he said.

He also mentioned that, while the GFA is open to forming legal partnerships, they will only do so through official channels.

“It is time to say no to such companies. We are open to doing it the legal way. We will invite companies who want to partner with us to speak to us.”

Okraku’s tenure has been marked by several match-fixing scandals, including the high-profile case involving AshantiGold and Inter Allies during the 2020/21 season.

As the GFA continues to address these challenges, the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season is scheduled to kick off on September 6.
