The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has defended his proposal to end the supply of food items to Senior High Schools (SHSs) by the National Food Buffer Stock Company as part of his plans to reform the Free SHS policy.
Mahama referenced allegations made by North Tongu Member of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, concerning the distribution of 22,000 bags of expired and repackaged rice to SHSs nationwide in February 2024.
During a media interaction on Thursday, November 14, 2024, Mr. Ablakwa claimed that the National Food Buffer Stock Company collaborated with a company named Lamens Investments Africa Limited to execute the alleged distribution.
Speaking at Asawinso in the Western North Region on Friday, as part of his campaign tour, Mahama advocated for decentralizing the food supply in SHSs.
“We all heard about the expired and repackaged rice distributed by the National Food Buffer Stock Company to various SHSs for our children to eat.
“This is why we propose giving the funds directly to the schools so they can make their own purchases,” he explained.
