the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has urged the public to report any station or driver who increases and charges new fares, following widespread rumours of a potential hike.
The union clarified that no official fare increment has been authorized, and the current fare structure remains unchanged.
In an interview with Adom News, Samuel Amoah, GPRTU’s Deputy Public Relations Officer, stressed that the union has not approved any increment.
“We want to make it clear that the union has not endorsed any increase in transport fares, and the public should not be misled by such speculations. Any station or driver found charging higher fares is violating the current rates, and we encourage passengers to report such cases immediately,” he urged.
Amoah also addressed claims by the Alliance of Drivers for Ghana, which announced a 20% increase in transport fares.
In response, he called on the group to withdraw its announcement, emphasizing that no such hike has been sanctioned by the GPRTU.
“We have advised the Alliance of Drivers for Ghana to hold off on implementing any fare increase. As it stands, we have not made any decision regarding an increment, and we urge all drivers to continue charging the established fare until further notice,” he stated.
He added that GPRTU leadership is closely monitoring fuel prices, the cost of spare parts, and other factors to determine whether an increment will be necessary.
Amoah reassured the public that the union will make an official announcement if a fare adjustment becomes necessary.
“We are committed to ensuring that any decisions made are in the best interest of both passengers and drivers. At this time, we urge the public to report any incidents where drivers or stations are charging new fares, and we will take the appropriate action,” he added.
