Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Dr Randy Abbey says there are no ongoing negotiations with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) regarding the broadcast rights for the Ghana Premier League (GPL).
In the past, the state-owned broadcaster has shown interest in securing the rights to air the country’s top football league, but the contract was ultimately awarded to StarTimes in 2019.
The Chinese television network has held the broadcast rights for both the GPL and the MTN FA Cup, but their contract ended with the conclusion of the 2023/24 season.
Speaking to Joy Sports, Dr Abbey mentioned that discussions between the GFA and StarTimes are currently underway, with the possibility of renewing the contract.
He also emphasized that GBC has not been granted TV rights, but has merely submitted a request to provide radio commentary.
“I am not aware of anything with GBC. The only thing I am aware of is GBC writing to the GFA requesting for rights to run radio commentary…,” he said when quizzed about reports of the state-owned broadcaster being given TV rights.
“They [StarTimes] are yet to honour, so the contract is ended and there are outstanding issues from the previous one. We’ve been engaging,” he added.
The 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season is scheduled to begin on September 6.
