Nkwanta South Conflict: Education in limbo as GES director demands teachers’ safety

-

The ongoing conflict in Nkwanta South in the Oti Region has plunged the educational sector into crisis, with schools closed and the academic future of thousands of students hanging in the balance.

The Nkwanta South Municipal Director of Education, Jonathan Korsinah, has made an urgent appeal to community leaders to provide security assurances for teachers to enable the resumption of academic activities.

Speaking to Adom News, Mr. Korsinah revealed that the unrest has forced the closure of 24 public and 18 private schools, affecting approximately 9,237 students.

He noted that four schools in particularly volatile areas will remain closed until guarantees are given for the safety of teachers.

“This is not the first time we’ve faced such a challenge. However, the current situation has become more dire, with over 579 public school teachers fleeing to safer locations due to concerns for their safety,” he said.

He stressed the importance of a secure environment for educators, warning that without adequate protection, the quality of education in Nkwanta South would continue to deteriorate.

“The education directorate remains committed to restoring access to quality education for all students, but this can only be achieved if teachers feel safe and supported in their roles,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Nkwanta South, Geoffrey Kini, has advised the education directorate and parents to prioritize safety over a rushed reopening of schools.

He emphasized the need for lasting peace and called on parents, authorities, and community leaders to work together to create a stable environment for learning.

The MP expressed hope that through collective efforts, Nkwanta South will soon regain the peace needed to revive education in the area.
