The Obuasi Circuit Court, presided over by His Lordship Mark Tairima Diboro, has remanded nine illegal miners into police custody for engaging in illegal mining (galamsey) at Adaase, a farming community in the Obuasi Municipality.
The accused are set to reappear in court on February 27, 2025.
They have been charged with conspiracy to commit a crime—illegal mining—and causing destruction to lands and river bodies.
The suspects were apprehended during a special operation by the Military, Police, and National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) aimed at cracking down on illegal mining activities, which continue to devastate the environment and water sources.
Speaking to Adom News after the court ruling, counsel for the complainant, Lawyer Osei Akomeah, expressed confidence in the ongoing fight against galamsey, stating that with effective legal action, the menace can be curbed.
The complainant, Nana Gyamerah Kwabena Yiakwan II, Kwapiahene, voiced concern over the absence of some accused persons in court.
He also called for swift prosecution to ensure justice is served and to deter others from engaging in illegal mining.
