Nigeria selfish, insensitive for closing border – MP

-

Member of Parliament for Odododiodoo constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, is of the view that Nigeria is being selfish and insensitive for closing its border without considering the negative effects on other Economic Community of West African States countries.

“We see Nigerians as our big brothers in West Africa in terms of population and land size so we expect them to take good initiatives for us to follow but I’ve realised they are selfish, they only think just about themselves.

“I wish President Nana Akufo-Addo had told the Nigerian president in their meeting that he is giving them a number of days to open his borders for his people otherwise he will also close his borders. Sometimes you have to do the wrong things for the right reasons,” he said.

The comment follows Nigeria’s border closure over smuggling of goods and how it is affecting Ghanaians and other traders across West Africa.

“I had the opportunity to speak to some Abossey-Okai spare parts traders and they admitted that the border closure has really affected them. They told me how their colleagues are stuck behind the borders and how retailers are refusing to take their products back,” he said in an interview with UTV, monitored by Adomonline.com.

“When you take just West Africa we have a market of 300 million and if we trade among ourselves it will benefit us more than trading with other continents because we don’t get enough benefit when we trade with them,” he said.
