Private legal practitioner Felix Ntoso has alleged that the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) is abusing individuals’ rights following invitations extended to some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Lawyer Ntoso stressed the need for public outcry against such actions, particularly given the experiences of those previously held in NIB custody.
“While the NIB has a legal mandate to arrest individuals suspected of corruption and related offences, this should not be an excuse for violating anyone’s rights. Due process must be followed, ensuring individuals are reasonably held accountable under the law,” he stated in an interview with Adom News.
He added, “Ghana is a democratic country, not a military regime. Such mistreatment by NIB officials should not be tolerated. Legal action must be taken against institutions like the NIB, the Ghana Police, and the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) whenever individuals’ rights are violated.”
Meanwhile, Deputy NPP Communications Director Ernest Owusu Bempah, who was detained by the NIB a few years ago, recounted the harsh conditions he endured.
According to him, he was arrested twice and taken to a secret location where he could not distinguish between day and night due to the absence of windows.
“They took me one time at 12 AM, blindfolded me, and transported me to a place where I later learned that Kwame Nkrumah and Jerry John Rawlings had been held. If you’re not mentally strong, you could lose your stability.
“I’ve been to the NIB twice, and I’m still here. If you’ve been there and you’re not careful, your life will never be the same after your release,” he narrated.
