NIA contract staff demand unpaid wages for Ghana card registration

-

Contract staff of the National Identification Authority (NIA) engaged in the nationwide Ghana Card registration for children under 15 are demanding payment of their wages for October and November 2024.

The affected workers, known as “Team One Nationwide,” claim they have fulfilled their duties diligently but have yet to receive any payment, despite repeated appeals to the NIA leadership.

“Despite our efforts to address this diplomatically, there has been no formal communication from the NIA on when our wages will be paid. Meanwhile, other teams involved in the same exercise have already been compensated, the group’s spokesperson, Matilda Tsri told Citi News.

Ms Tsri explained that the NIA initially assured Team One that their wages would be handled directly, while the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) was responsible for paying Teams Two and Three.

However, only Teams Two and Three have received their salaries.

“We were expecting our salaries in December. While our colleagues in Teams Two and Three received theirs, we didn’t. When we contacted the head office and management, we were told the NIA was responsible and asked to be patient. But to date, the money hasn’t been paid,” she said.

Adding to their frustration, the workers allege that the NIA directed them to the NHIA for payment, but the NHIA has denied responsibility and redirected them back to the NIA.

This back-and-forth has left the contract staff in limbo.

The workers are calling for immediate intervention from the NIA to resolve the issue and ensure they are compensated for their work.
