An NGO called Perfector of Sentiments (POS) Foundation is lobbying government to accept Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) rights recommendations by the United Nations (UN).
Their lobby comes after President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo launched the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, with a call on all to ensure that the fight for the protection and respect for human rights remains a constant one.
The leader of the group, Jonathan Osei Owusu said it is not right to harm LGBT people because that is against their human rights.
He said last year 2017 out of 241 human rights recommendations given to Ghana led by the Attorney General by United Nations (UN), Ghana has implemented 200 remaining 41, which the right of Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) is part
He said as the President has promised to fight for the human rights of all Ghanaian, they are calling him to accept the rights of LGBT persons to prevent them from being maltreated.
Jonathan Osei Owusu also said some of our prisons are congested and it is to the nation to cater for their well being because they have their right rather than torching them
But the Deputy Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Gifty Ampofo Twum says UN recommendations cannot be implemented in a vacuum there is no obligation to implement all.
She rather urges that the country should focus on how to build national systems to ensure effective monitoring of the UN human rights recommendations that are being implemented.
