Next NDC govt will deal with ECG’s revenue losses – Minority

-

The Minority in Parliament has pledged that a future National Democratic Congress (NDC) government will prioritize involving local entrepreneurs in the billing and revenue collection operations of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

This move is part of a strategy to curb the financial losses that continue to plague the power distribution company.

A recent communication from the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) highlighted ECG’s significant financial challenges, warning that the company could be at risk of bankruptcy.

Addressing the media in Accra, Ranking Member of Parliament’s Energy Committee, John Jinapor, emphasized that under a John Dramani Mahama-led administration, the NDC would introduce reforms to restore the ECG to profitability.

“Losses have escalated from 22 percent to over 30 percent. No utility company can survive such losses. President Mahama has already committed to revitalizing the energy sector once in office” Jinapor remarked.

“We will work with local Ghanaian entrepreneurs in a concession arrangement for billing and collection to help reduce these losses. Without cutting these losses, progress is impossible. Moreover, stabilizing the currency is crucial to sustaining the growth we aim to achieve,” he added.
