A member of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) legal team, Mr Abraham Amaliba says the NDC will file a law suit against the Electoral Commission (EC) over plans to compile a new Voters Register ahead of election 2020.
The EC in March 2019 announced it will compile a new Voters Register for the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr Amaliba said the NDC is against the strategy announced by the EC for the compilation of the new register.
“It is the aim of every EC to get more eligible voters in the register. The EC does everything possible to achieve this, but our EC deliberately wants to disenfranchise people. There are some districts without EC offices, so what are those people going to do?” he asked.
“This exercise is mostly done at the electoral areas, so why is the Jean Mensa EC insisting we do it at the district office. We will go to court and leave the case for the court to judge the matter,” he added.
Mr Amaliba added that other parties have equally expressed their disgust about the plan outlined by the EC.
“We disagreed with this issue when it was raised at an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting, so which other platform does the EC expect us to address this issue? IPAC is meant to deliberate on electoral issues, but they refused to listen to us at the meeting,” he added.
