The National Election Response Group (NERG), formed under the Electoral Violence Monitoring, Analysis, and Mitigation (E-MAM) project, has issued its first update on the pre-election environment.
The project, funded by the European Union and spearheaded by the National Peace Council (NPC) in collaboration with the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), aims to promote peaceful and credible elections in Ghana.
Since its launch in May 2024, NERG, which comprises representatives from state institutions, civil society organizations, and other non-partisan election stakeholders, has been actively monitoring the pre-election atmosphere.
The group has identified several concerns that could potentially undermine peace during the election period and wishes to raise public awareness and encourage consensus building among key actors.
Destruction of Political Party Publicity Materials
One of the primary issues NERG has observed is the defacing and destruction of political party posters, billboards, and other campaign materials. This disturbing trend, typically carried out by opposing political factions, poses a serious threat to the peace and security of the country.
NERG calls on the public to refrain from such acts, urging Ghanaians to respect the democratic process. The group also appeals to the Ghana Police Service to increase monitoring efforts and swiftly respond to any incidents of political vandalism to preserve the peace.
Religious Sentiments in Political Discourse
Another concerning trend noted by NERG is the growing use of religious sentiments in political pronouncements. Politicians and religious leaders have, in some instances, stirred up rhetoric that exploits religious divisions, which could heighten tensions as the general election approaches.
NERG stresses the importance of religious tolerance and harmony, which has long been a hallmark of Ghanaian society. As the elections draw near, NERG encourages the public to remember the peaceful coexistence of individuals from different religious backgrounds and to resist divisive rhetoric.
Appreciation to Stakeholders for Electoral Consensus Building
Despite these challenges, NERG commended the collective efforts of key electoral stakeholders in ensuring the smooth functioning of the electoral system thus far.
The group expressed its deep appreciation to the Electoral Commission (EC), the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and all other political parties for the cooperative spirit they have demonstrated in building a credible and robust voters’ register.
NERG emphasized that maintaining this collaborative approach among political stakeholders is crucial for safeguarding Ghana’s democracy and ensuring peaceful and credible elections. The group’s appreciation serves as a reminder that peaceful elections are a shared responsibility that requires the commitment of all sectors of society.
As Ghana prepares for its upcoming elections, NERG remains committed to monitoring the situation closely, promoting peaceful electoral conduct, and addressing any issues that may threaten the stability of the country.
The group calls on all Ghanaians to support efforts to uphold peace and democracy throughout the election period.
