A Sowutuom Branch Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mohammed Ibrahim, who was jailed for four years for threatening to kill citizens during the December 7, 2024 elections, has been granted bail.
The Court of Appeal granted him bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 with one surety pending appeal.
The three-member panel, presided over by Justice Senyo Dzamefe, held that there was an error on the face of the record.
The court ordered Ibrahim to report to the Regional Crime Officer every two weeks.
His appeal was earlier rejected by the High Court when he applied for bail pending appeal. However, his lawyer, Nii Kpakpo Samuah Addo, proceeded to the Court of Appeal, which overturned the decision.
Ibrahim was sentenced last year to four years in prison by an Accra Circuit Court after being found guilty of publication of false news with intent to cause fear and alarm, threat of harm, and offensive conduct to breach the peace.
He was sentenced to three years for publication of false news, four years for threat of harm, and three years for offensive conduct. The sentences were to run concurrently.
The prosecution said Ibrahim identified himself as the leader of a revolutionary group known as “Ka na wu,” meaning “Speak and die” in Twi.
On September 3, 2024, the Ghana Police Service was alerted to a video of Ibrahim circulating on Facebook, X, and TikTok, in which he wore a red military beret and alleged that the police, under the direction of then-Inspector General Dr. George Akuffo Dampare and former Interior Minister Henry Quartey, were recruiting fake officers to kill citizens during the elections.
He claimed he and his group knew where the minister lived and threatened to kill him in the event of war.
On September 10, 2024, the police declared Ibrahim wanted, leading to his arrest. A search of his residence in Sowutuom led to the retrieval of the red beret seen in the viral video.
