The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of failing to take decisive action against illegal mining, also known as galamsey.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, March 26, Ahiagbah alleged that members of the NDC feel emboldened to engage in galamsey, believing that the administration of former President John Mahama would be lenient on the issue.
“The President is not focused on fighting galamsey. What we experienced in 2016 before he left office is resurfacing. As we all can tell, NDC members are visibly engaging in illegal mining because they know their party will be lenient due to promises made to galamseyers during their campaign,” he claimed.
Ahiagbah also accused President Mahama of neglecting environmental protection and anti-corruption efforts, suggesting that his administration was more focused on targeting political opponents than addressing governance challenges.
“Our environment is being sacrificed, and our democratic rights are under attack. This is the consequence of our choice on December 7, and we must all come together to fight it,” Mr. Ahiagbah added.
