The NDC Majority Caucus in Parliament has issued a stern demand for an immediate apology from NPP Minority Leader Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, following his alleged “personal attacks” on the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.
The Majority Caucus expressed disappointment over what they consider disrespectful and unparliamentary conduct by Afenyo-Markin, who reportedly launched a series of media criticisms against the Speaker.
The controversy stems from an urgent parliamentary recall invoked by Afenyo-Markin under Article 112 (3) and Order 53 of the Parliamentary Standing Orders.
This was the third recall this year, which reportedly disrupted MPs’ schedules, requiring them to abandon campaign activities.
However, on the scheduled day, the NPP Minority allegedly failed to attend the session, forcing the Speaker to adjourn Parliament indefinitely.
The NDC Majority has described Afenyo-Markin’s actions as an abuse of parliamentary protocols and accused him of disregarding the legislative process.
They further criticized his media appearances, in which he allegedly spoke of the Speaker in “unparliamentary terms,” aimed at undermining his reputation.
According to the Majority, the Speaker of Parliament has been steadfast in upholding constitutional principles and protecting Ghana’s parliamentary integrity.
They commended the Speaker’s dedication, urging the Minority Leader to retract his comments and offer an unqualified apology to restore decorum within the House.
Additionally, the NDC cautioned that any future recalls led by Afenyo-Markin would be met with resistance, as they view repeated recalls without full commitment as disruptive and costly to taxpayers.
