The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is calling for a broader national consensus on the amendment of Article 55(3) of the constitution.
In a statement signed by NDC’s National Chairman, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, the party said it had constituted a team to engage with the government on the subject at government’s earliest convenience.

“Mr President, we have taken this initiative to put forward these suggestions regardless of your unfortunate characterisation of the NDC’s position as a U-turn when government’s own decision to abort the referendum in favour of broader consultation amounts to same,” the statement said.
It added: “It is also critical for us to seek a consensus on how we can prevent extreme partisan polarisation of our politics at the national level from seeping into our local government system.”
