NCCE condemns Asiedu Nketia over vigilante comment

-

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has condemned the endorsement of vigilante groups, especially in the quarters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), by General Secretary of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketia.

The Commission says it is saddened by the development which goes against the nationwide condemnation of political party vigilantism prior to the 2016 general election.

According to Asiedu Nketia,  it is not wrong to welcome such groups in the NDC since President Akufo-Addo has so far shown reluctance in cracking the whip on the ruling NPP’s own vigilante groups.

Mr Nketia’s comments follow public uproar over the outdooring of a new NDC vigilante group during last Saturday’s regional elections in Sunyani.

But the  Ashanti Regional Director of the NCCE Wilson Arthur says vigilantism will not promote national peace and security.

Vigilantism, he noted, breeds political tension and political intolerance with the tendency to destroy all the gains made under the 4th Republic.

It is wrong to hear about vigilantism in political parties. We need these political parties to promote peace because vigilantism will only create chaos and not promote peace and security” he said on Neat FM monitored by Adomonline.com.

Mr Wilson Arthur said all security agencies must be proactive in clamping down on such illegal groups urging all political parties, especially the NPP and NDC to disband existing vigilante groups.

He further entreated all political parties and the entire citizenry to strive to promote civic consciousness and stir up patriotism and nationalism among Ghanaians.

He also advised political parties to use their influence to promote adherence to peace and order among all groups in the country in order to safeguard the peace that we are enjoying.
