As part of the celebration of the 20 years anniversary of National Ambulance Service (NAS), the Service has held a health and breast cancer awareness walk.

The walk, which started from the Obra spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle and ended at the headquarters of NAS in Accra was attended by over 300 staff of NAS including management and other security services like Ghana Police Service, Immigration Service and Ghana National Fire Service.

The aim of the walk is to improve cardiovascular fitness, raise awareness, support those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and teach on how to prevent it.

Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer for the Service, Professor Ahmed Nuhu Zakariah thanked all EMTs and urged them to continue with their dedication.

“We have visited other jurisdictions, and what you are doing is the same your counterpart out there are doing to save lives, continue to persevere and you won’t regret, even in retirement you can still practice it” he said

The Deputy Director of Operations for the Service, Dr. Foster Ansong Bridjan also encouraged the EMTs to participate in the breast screening exercise, towards early detection to save lives.

Sophia Darkoa Boakye from the Family Medicine Department of the Korle Bu Teaching hospital urged all women to know the breast self-examination by examining their breast every month and annually do the mammogram, a scan done to detect any abnormality in the cells of the breast.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is marked in countries across the world, and helps to increase attention and support for awareness, early diagnosis, and treatment as well as palliative care for women facing this disease.

There are about 1.7 million new cases and 522,000 deaths from breast cancer each year.
