Dr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, the running mate of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) flagbearer has lauded the government’s Gold-for-Oil deal.
The former Energy Minister has said the initiative is the single transformative policy ever in Ghana.
Napo as he is popularly known said this in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Wednesday.
He touted the policy as the real game changer in Ghana’s economy as it played a crucial role in conserving the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) foreign exchange reserves.
Napo stated that, it also reduced the burden of foreign currency shortages in the downstream petroleum sector.
The Gold for Oil policy was introduced by the government to help reduce the pressure on the cedi and bring in cheaper fuel.
So far, over 100,000 metric tons of fuel have been brought into Ghana under the policy.
However, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama said he will probe the if he is elected President in the December 7 election.
The former President noted that, the policy is opaque and requires thorough investigation.
But Napo reacting to this has downplayed the promise, stating the pledge to investigate the deal doesn’t show anything.
