The Vice Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has urged the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to cease unwarranted attacks on the Electoral Commission (EC) ahead of the December 7 elections.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh, commonly known as Napo said the NDC’s constant criticism of the EC could heighten tensions ahead of the elections.
He cautioned that, the NDC’s ambition to win the upcoming election should not lead its leaders, particularly former President John Mahama, to compromise the peace, stability, and security of the nation.
Speaking at a meeting with chiefs and religious leaders in New Edubiase, Ashanti Region, on Monday, Dr. Prempeh emphasized that while political parties have the right to challenge the EC, they must do so with respect and civility.
He charged political parties to engage with the EC in a manner that upholds the integrity and fairness of the electoral process, which is constitutionally mandated to oversee the polls.
“Parties can protest decisions of the EC, but we must avoid actions that cast doubt on the credibility of the elections,” Napo remarked.
The NPP vice presidential candidate also expressed concern over the NDC’s attempts to portray the EC as biased, accusing it of planning to rig the election for a particular party.
According to him, such actions by the NDC have the potential to create unrest and threaten national peace, underscoring the importance of putting the country’s stability above all else.
“Raising concerns about the electoral process is important, but it must be done in the interest of Ghana,” Napo advised.
“We must remember that we have only one country to develop.”
He called on all Ghanaians to play their part in safeguarding the peace of the country before, during, and after the elections, warning that disturbances could hinder the nation’s progress.
