The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has confirmed the demise of five people after a heavy downpour flooded parts of Ghana’s capital Accra on Sunday night.
Speaking on Starr FM, Monday, the Greater Accra Regional Director of NADMO, Archibald Cobbinah said four deaths were directly linked with the rains and one due to electrocution.
“We recorded some casualties unfortunately after the rain at Avenor, Awudome cemetery, Flamingo, where a mother and daughter were involved. For the electrocution, we can still count it as part of the rain issues,” he announced.

Mr Cobinnah added that NADMO is always prepared to intervene in disaster situations and reiterated the point that it takes the efforts of Ghanaians as stakeholders to make their work effective and efficient.
“We have always been prepared and under the leadership of Nana Agyemang Prempeh, we have embarked on so many training programmes to educate people. We are all stakeholders but it seems Ghanaians feel relaxed when the rains are over and do not carry the education on,” he noted.
“The way and manner in which we also keep putting garbage in our gutters will not help us in anyway at all. It is sad how people take advantage of the rains to collect and put rubbish in our drains. We need to enforce laws that will punish people who litter and throw rubbish in our drains,” he appealed.

Mr Cobbinah urged Ghanaians to play an active role in ensuring their safety during the rainy seasons.
“People should identify safe havens within their communities where they can be safe, especially when they know their houses or community floods when it rains.”
Meanwhile, the Ghana Meteorological Agency has warned of heavy rains in the coming days as the rainy season sets in.
