NADMO boss clarifies role of Anti-Flood Taskforce

The Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Major (Rtd) Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon, has clarified the role of the Anti-Flood Taskforce established by President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking on Citi FM on Tuesday, April 8, Major Kuyon explained that the taskforce was not set up to directly implement flood control measures, but rather to conduct a rapid assessment of flood-prone areas ahead of the rainy season.

“The taskforce formed by the President was only to go around and confirm the flood risk levels in certain areas. They completed their assessment and briefed him, after which he also visited some of the locations personally,” he said.

He stressed that the taskforce’s role was observational and advisory—meant to gather firsthand information for presidential briefings and strategic planning.

Major Kuyon added that the actual implementation of flood mitigation measures remains the responsibility of NADMO and its partner institutions.

“NADMO does not work in isolation. We coordinate with the Ghana Meteorological Agency, the Armed Forces, the National Fire Service, and other relevant institutions to manage disaster risks,” he stated.

The Anti-Flood Taskforce, chaired by Stanislav Xoese Dogbe, was inaugurated on March 12 as part of renewed efforts to reduce the impact of urban flooding, particularly in vulnerable areas of Accra.
