The Member of Parliament for the Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong wants the Elmina and Cape Coast castles privatised.
Mr Agyapong’s proposition, according to him, will lead to better management of the facilities as it will lead to greater commitment to the facilities’ maintenance and rake in the needed tourism revenues.

“The Cape Coast and Elmina castles should be given to a private company to run to help revamp the place. The commitment of Ghanaians toward anything public is the reason for this decline. The commitment level is low because people think these are for the government,” he said.
His call was backed by the Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Allotey Jacobs, who was also on Adom TV’s Badwam show on Tuesday.

“The site used to be top tourist site for most Ghanaians and foreigners from all walks of life. We used to have about 380,000 visitors annually but the story is different now. It should be privatised to make it attractive and active.”

Both Elmina and Cape Coast Castles, until now, were tourists’ destinations for many but the fortunes have dwindled, a situation which has sent many tongues wagging.
