Monkeypox Outbreak: Here’s how to protect yourself from contracting disease

-

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently declared Monkeypox (Mpox) a global health emergency.

In response, the government, through the Ministry of Health (MOH), has activated an emergency response plan to combat the spread of the disease in the country.

Here are key steps to protect yourself from contracting Mpox.

  1. Monitor Rashes Carefully: Be vigilant if you notice a rash that resembles chickenpox. Mpox can manifest differently at various stages, making it challenging to distinguish from a regular rash. Avoid self-diagnosing; seek medical attention immediately if you or someone in your household develops a rash.
  2. Avoid Skin-to-Skin Contact: Mpox is highly infectious and can spread easily through skin-to-skin contact. If you are in a setting where people may not be fully clothed, such as parties, clubs, or swimming pools, it is advisable to avoid close contact with others.
  3. Do Not Touch Rashes: Mpox rashes are often visible on the face, hands, and mouth, but can also appear in private areas. If you suspect someone’s rash might be serious, refrain from touching it.
  4. Avoid Sharing Personal Items: Do not share towels, bed sheets, or clothing with anyone suspected of having Mpox. It’s crucial to use separate towels and utensils if you believe someone around you may be infected. If you suspect a case, report it to the nearest hospital or health authority immediately.
  5. Practice Good Hygiene: Wash your hands thoroughly after touching anything that may have come into contact with someone’s rash. Handwashing is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself and others from infection.
