MoMo agents threaten strike over ‘galamsey’

-

The Mobile Money Advocacy Group (MOMAG) has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike in protest of the devastation caused by illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey.

MoMAG has served notice to execute their threat by the end of September if there is no decisive action from the government.

MOMAG representatives sounded the caution on Accra-based Channel One TV as they added their voice to the ‘I Stand Against Galamsey’ campaign.

The campaign seeks to amplify the voices of associations, organizations, and unions calling for an end to ‘galamsey’.

The National Secretary, Kingsley Amoako Atta acknowledged the strike action will be detrimental to businesses and Ghanaians at large.

However, he said they will be left with no option if the government fails to heed their call.

“In light of the government’s inaction, MOMAG is left with no choice but to consider a nationwide strike and this strike will impact momo transactions, bill payments, salary payments, and financial inclusion will also be affected,” he stated.

Mr Atta on behalf of the group called for the declaration of a state of emergency in areas where there are  water bodies as well as the cancellation of all mining leases of company who work in these waterbodies.

Additionally, he also called for the enforcement of laws and regulations governing mining activities and the provision of alternative livelihood for illegal miners.
